Main Sights Reykjavík

Hallgrimskirkja church tower is one of Reykjavík's main landmarks and can be seen from almost everywhere in the city. It is situated at the top of Skólavörðustígur, Reykjavík's main arts and designs shopping district.

In front of the church is a statue of Iceland-born Leifur Eiriksson, or 'Leif the Lucky', the first European to discover America (around 1,000 A.D.).

The church tower, open daily from 09:00 - 20:00, offers a splendid view over the city.

The revolving restaurant, Perlan has a viewing deck and a cafeteria on the 4th floor that is open daily from 10:00-21:00. From the viewing deck you have a great view spanning Reykjavík and the surrounding area, with telescopes at each of the six corners of the deck.

Nauthólsvík is Reykjavík's only public beach. It is heated with geothermal heated water making water temperatures of the lagoon usually between 18° - 20°C. There is a shallow pool in front of the service house kept between 30°-35°C and a geothermal hot tub on the beach, near the seashore.
Nautholsvik is open from May 15th till August 31st from 10:00-20:00 on weekdays and until 18:00 on weekends (20:00 on sunny days). There are changing facilities and showers with some refreshments sold on site.

Swimming pools. There are many high quality swimming pools in Reykjavík, with hot tubs, steambaths, jacuzzis, slides, play areas for children and more. The average temperature of the pools is 29°C and you can choose from various hot tubs with water temperatures from 37-45°C. Wherever you are staying in Reykjavík, there will always be a swimming pool nearby.

Reykjavík City Hall is located on the northern shore of Lake Tjörnin. On the ground floor you'll find Café Radhuskaffi with a lovely view of the lake. There are also galleries with a steady stream of new and exciting exhibitions. In the exhibition halls there is a huge map of Iceland, something worth seeing before or after travelling around the country. The city hall is open from 08:00-19:00 on weekdays and from 12:00-18:00 on weekends.

Laugardalur (Hot Spring Valley) is a major recreation area of Reykjavík. The largest outdoor thermal pool in the city, Laugardalslaug, is located there as well as a sports stadium and football tracks. In addition there's a beautiful botanical garden with the garden café, Café Flora located within. Beside the botanical garden is the Family Park and Zoo, home of most types of Icelandic animals, such as reindeer, horse, fox, sheep, goats, cows, pigs, seal, many species of birds and more.
Reykjavík Art Museum's, Ásmundarsafn sculpture collection is also in the valley.

Viðey Island is only a few minutes away from the city of Reykjavík by boat. It is renowned for its cultural and historical importance and was a site for a monastery in the middle ages.
The Viðeyjarstofa house, built in 1755, was the first construction made of stone and cement in the country. It is now a popular restaurant. There was a small fishing village on the eastern part of the island until 1943 when all the inhabitants left. Hiking paths can be found all around the island, a bike rental and a children's playground.
