Main Sights South Iceland
Þingvellir National Park, the site of Iceland´s ancient parliament. There, as early as AD 930, Icelandic Vikings gathered for legislative sessions which continued until the late 18th century. The area has been designated a national park and is now on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Þingvellir is a most interesting geological site. The continental drift between the North American and Eurasian Plates can be clearly seen in the fissures and faults which are traversing the region, the biggest one, Almannagjá, a true canyon.
Geysir Hot Springs Geothermal Area is located in Haukadalur valley. All of earth's geysers get their name from this large geyser in Iceland, the great Geysir, which no longer is active, but instead the geyser Strokkur spouts boiling water every 5 to 15 minutes. There are some thirty much smaller geysers and hot pools in the area.
Gullfoss, the Golden Waterfall, is a majestic waterfall that rushes down the canyon of the Hvítá River. It plunges in two majestic cascades, 70 meters deep and 2.5 kilometres long. An information centre is located nearby.
Dyrhólaey, meaning island with a hole, is a 100 meters high cliff on a peninsula that reaches into the Atlantic Ocean. You can see fascinating columnar basalt formations and strange rock shapes on the cliff. The area is rich with bird life and on the top of the island is a lighthouse.
Eldgjá is the world's largest volcanic canyon and in the canyon you will find the waterfall, Ófærufoss.
Eyjafjallajökull is one of the island's smaller ice caps but under the ice cap lays the volcano that erupted in 2010 causing a big air traffic disturbance.
Hvannadalshnúkur is the peak of the Öræfajökull glacier, the country's highest point at 2110 meters.
Mt. Hekla is Iceland's most active volcano, with 20 eruptions since the settlement of the island. Hekla is popular for hiking, the walk to the top taking approximately 3 to 4 hours.
Jökulsárlón is a glacial lagoon close to the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, a glacier tongue from the mighty Vatnajökull glacier. It is filled with meltwater from the glacier and is filled with floating icebergs heading towards the Atlantic Ocean.
Skaftafell National Park is one of the country's most diverse natural attractions. Here one can find glaciers, glacial lakes and rivers, waterfalls, rare birdlife, flora and fauna. It is an ideal place for hikers, with no roads in the park, and a variety of hiking trails. There is a visitors' centre in the park and park wardens offer regular guided walking tours.
